Shower & Wet Room Tiling

Shower enclosures and wet rooms are the most technically demanding tiling work in the home. The entire area must be waterproofed before a single tile goes down. Failures in this process — missed corners, inadequate tanking or incorrect adhesive — cause moisture penetration that can take months to become visible but then requires expensive remediation.

Wet rooms present additional challenges: the floor must be laid to a precise fall (typically 1:80) to drain correctly, and the waterproofing system must be continuous from floor to walls. Your tiler should use a proprietary tanking system with a manufacturer warranty, use flexible tile adhesive and grout throughout, and finish all internal corners with silicone rather than grout.

What’s involved

  • ✓ Waterproofing membrane application (tanking)
  • ✓ Tile backer board installation if required
  • ✓ Floor fall setting for wet rooms
  • ✓ Tile fixing with flexible S1 adhesive
  • ✓ Grouting with flexible or epoxy grout
  • ✓ Silicone to all corners and changes of plane

Typical costs

£600–£1,500 for a standard shower enclosure fully tiled and tanked. Wet rooms cost £800–£2,500+ depending on size, drainage solution and tile choice.

Prices vary by region, subfloor condition and product choice. Compare 3 quotes for the most accurate price for your specific job.

FAQs — Shower & Wet Room Tiling

What is tanking and why is it important?
Tanking means applying a waterproof membrane to the walls and floor of the shower or wet room before tiling. Without it, water penetrates through tile joints over time, causing mould, structural damage and eventual tile failure. A proper tanking system uses a membrane bonded to the substrate at all corners and joints.
What adhesive and grout should be used in a shower?
Use a flexible S1 or S2 rated tile adhesive and flexible or epoxy grout. Standard adhesives and grouts are not rated for continuous water immersion and will eventually fail in a shower. All internal corners should be sealed with silicone, not grout, to allow for building movement.
Can I tile a wet room myself?
Technically possible, but wet room tanking and floor fall installation are skilled work where mistakes are costly. An error in the tanking system may not become apparent for months. A professional tiler with experience in wet rooms is strongly recommended.
How long does shower tiling take?
A standard shower enclosure takes 2–3 days including preparation, tiling and grouting. A full wet room takes 3–5 days. Allow 24–48 hours before using the shower after grouting.
How much does shower and wet room tiling cost?
A standard shower enclosure costs £600–£1,500 fully tiled and tanked. Wet rooms cost £800–£2,500+. Get 3 quotes from local tilers for an accurate price for your project.
