Floor Tiling

Floor tiling is one of the most durable and low-maintenance options for kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and open-plan living areas. Porcelain tiles in particular are extremely hard, frost-resistant (for outdoor use) and available in formats from small mosaics to large 1200x600mm slabs. A professional tiler ensures perfect alignment, consistent grout lines and a level finish.

The substrate must be solid and flat before any tiles go down. Your tiler will check for flex, uneven boards or cracked screed and address these before starting. Large-format tiles require a particularly flat base and specialist adhesive. The choice of grout — colour, joint width, whether to use epoxy or standard — makes a significant difference to the finished result.

Typical costs

£30–£70 per m² supply and fitted for standard ceramic or porcelain. Natural stone and large-format tiles cost more. A typical 10m² kitchen floor costs £300–£700 all in.

FAQs — Floor Tiling

What type of tile is best for floors?
Porcelain is the most popular choice — it is harder than ceramic, less porous and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. For bathrooms and kitchens, choose a tile with a slip resistance rating of R10 or above. Natural stone is beautiful but requires sealing and more maintenance.
How important is subfloor preparation for tiling?
Critical. Tiles crack if the subfloor flexes. Timber floors usually need a plywood overlay to provide rigidity. Concrete floors must be flat and free from dust and contamination. Your tiler should check and address subfloor issues before starting.
What grout should I use for floor tiles?
Wide joints (3mm+) need a sand-and-cement or standard cement grout. Narrow joints (1–2mm) suit unsanded grout. Epoxy grout is more stain-resistant and hygienic in kitchens and wet rooms but more expensive and harder to apply. Ask your tiler for a recommendation.
How long after floor tiling can I walk on it?
Most tile adhesives allow light foot traffic after 24 hours. Grouting should wait at least 24 hours after the adhesive has set. Full traffic loads should wait 48–72 hours. Your tiler will advise based on the specific products used.
How much does floor tiling cost?
Typically £30–£70 per m² supply and fitted for standard tiles. Large-format, natural stone and mosaic tiles cost more. Get 3 quotes to compare prices for your specific job.
