Natural Stone Tiling

Natural stone — marble, travertine, limestone, slate, sandstone and granite — brings unmatched character and beauty to floors and walls. Each stone is unique, with natural veining, colour variation and surface texture. Natural stone requires a higher level of skill to tile correctly, as cuts must be planned to make the most of the stone’s natural pattern, and the correct adhesive and sealer must be used for each stone type.

Unlike porcelain and ceramic, natural stone is porous. Limestone, travertine and sandstone in particular must be sealed before use and periodically re-sealed to protect them from staining. Some stones, such as marble, are also sensitive to acidic cleaning products. An experienced natural stone tiler understands these requirements and will advise on the correct aftercare for your specific stone.

What’s involved

  • ✓ Stone selection and matching advice
  • ✓ Substrate preparation (natural stone requires a rigid, flat base)
  • ✓ Adhesive selection appropriate for the stone type
  • ✓ Layout planning to show the stone to its best advantage
  • ✓ Precise cutting with wet-saw
  • ✓ Grouting with appropriate coloured grout
  • ✓ Sealing before and after grouting

Typical costs

£50–£120+ per m² supply and fitted, depending on stone type and format. Marble and granite are at the higher end. Sealing costs an additional £5–£15 per m².

FAQs — Natural Stone Tiling

Does natural stone need to be sealed?
Yes. Most natural stones are porous and will absorb liquids, leading to staining if not sealed. Limestone, travertine, sandstone and marble require sealing before use and periodic re-sealing depending on traffic. Granite is less porous but benefits from sealing in kitchens. Your tiler will seal the stone after grouting.
What is the difference between honed, polished and tumbled stone finishes?
Polished: highly reflective, shows veining clearly, marks easily. Honed: matte or satin finish, more practical and less slippery underfoot. Tumbled: aged, textured appearance, very slip-resistant. For bathroom floors, honed or tumbled finishes are recommended over polished.
Can natural stone be used outdoors?
Slate, sandstone and granite are suitable for outdoor use in the UK. Marble, travertine and limestone are less frost-resistant and should be avoided outdoors or used only in covered areas. Always confirm frost resistance with your supplier and tiler.
How do I clean natural stone tiles?
Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner — never acidic products (vinegar, lemon, standard bathroom cleaners) on marble, limestone or travertine. These acids etch the stone surface permanently. Steam cleaners are generally safe for sealed stone.
How much does natural stone tiling cost?
Typically £50–£120+ per m² supply and fitted depending on the stone. Sealing adds £5–£15 per m². Get 3 quotes from experienced natural stone tilers to compare prices for your project.
