Getting ready for a tiling job is straightforward, but a little preparation goes a long way. These steps help the tiler work efficiently and reduce the chance of delays or extra charges on the day.
1. Clear the Room
Remove furniture, rugs and any items stored in the space being tiled. For bathroom jobs, remove any accessories attached to the tiled area.
2. Ensure Tiles Are On-Site
If you are supplying the tiles, make sure they are delivered before the tiler arrives. Waiting for a tile delivery on the day wastes both your time and the tiler's.
3. Order 10-20% Extra Tiles
Always order more tiles than the measured area requires. A standard allowance is 10% for straight lay and 15-20% for herringbone or diagonal patterns.
4. Let Tiles Acclimatise
Tiles - particularly natural stone - should be stored at room temperature for 24 hours before installation to minimise expansion and contraction once laid.
5. Ensure the Subfloor is Sound
Tiles need a solid, level base. If your floor has flex or soft spots, raise this with your tiler before the job starts.
6. Confirm What the Quote Includes
Before the tiler starts, confirm that you both agree on the scope of work, the tile layout and pattern, and what happens if tiles run short.
7. Protect Adjacent Surfaces
Cover floor areas adjacent to the work zone with dustsheets. Tile cutting creates a significant amount of fine dust.
8. Plan for Drying Time
Adhesive needs 24-48 hours to cure before grouting, and grout needs a further 24 hours before the area is used. For bathrooms, factor this into your schedule and arrange alternative facilities if needed.
